Healthcare Tips : Ask your Pharmacist about your medicine
Ask your Pharmacist about your medicine 12/14/08

Pharmacists are a great resource for advice on your medication. Call or come in to our pharmacy and our Pharmacist, Gus, will give you good advice on prescription and over-the-counter medicines. So before taking any medication, talk with Gus the pharmacist.
Here are some questions to ask:

  • Why am I taking this medicine?
  • What are the benefits of taking this medicine?
  • When do I start taking it? When do I stop?
  • Does this medicine cause side effects? How do I deal with the side effects?
  • Do the side effects ever go away?
  • Do any of these medicines cause problems when I take them together?
  • Is it safe to have an alcoholic drink while on these medicines?
  • What else should I know about this medicine?
  • How do I know if this medicine is working?
  • How should I store my medicine?
Cost
Talk to Gus about the cost of your medicine. There may be an alternative to the medicine you have been prescribed. Gus will gladly call your doctor and recommend a medicine that may cost less, such as a generic.

Check your medicine
At least once per year, review your medicine with Gus. By bringing in all your medicines you are taking, both prescription and over-the-counter, you can find out many things about them. Here are some things you can find out about your medicines:

  • What these medicines do
  • Am I taking any medicines properly?
  • Are any of my medicines expired?
Keep records
It’s a good idea to keep certain records. Here’s a list of what you should have:
  • Keep a list of all the medicines you take. Put it somewhere where it is easy to find. Bring this list with you every time you visit your doctor
  • Write down any allergies you have to medicines
